Best Scenic Drives – London Edition

Not every great drive is famous. In fact, the best ones usually aren’t.

The real magic isn’t on the tourist routes or TikTok hotspots.  It’s the places locals gate-keep which usually have the most to offer. Now, if you’re London-based, you don’t need a 6-hour road trip to feel something.  You just need the right road. Here are some scenic drives that actually hit – including a few low-key gems most people drive past without realising what they’re missing.

Box Hill, Surrey

The view from Box Hill

London’s closest “escape road”.

Tight bends, rolling hills, and views that make you forget you’re only 40 minutes from the city. Early mornings here feel cinematic. Box Hill represents the urban-to-nature shift – where London stress melts into countryside calm.

Zig Zag Road, Box Hill (The Back Way)

Zig Zag Road, Box Hill, Surrey

While the main road is enough to make you stop and stare, the locals take the zig zag. It’s short, twisty, and visually wild, making it feel like a mini mountain pass hiding in Surrey.

Reigate Hill & Gatton Bottom

The View @ Reigate & Gatton Bottom

Wide roads, smooth curves, and views that open up without warning.

It feels like a secret because nobody talks about it. This one is perfect for sunset drives and even better with good music. Company is optional.

Devil’s Dyke Road, Sussex

Devil’s Dyke Road

High ground. Big skies. Wind in the trees. This road feels dramatic without trying too hard.  DeviL’s Dyke is one of those drives where the scenery does the talking. Absolute tranquility and not a headache to get back home from.

Whipsnade to Dunstable Downs

Whitstable/Dunstable Downs

If you’re a fan of open roads, rolling hills and massive skies then this is the one for you. This drive feels bigger than the UK usually does because it’s quiet, spacious, and strangely calming. Great for late evening drives when the world slows down, or sunset drives to start your day off right.

Chiltern Hills Backroads

This one’s not a single road it’s a whole vibe. This place makes you feel like time can’t touch you with it’s narrow lanes and golden fields. If any of these places make you want to slow down and take in the scenery, this is the one. If you get a chance to see the Chiltern Hills, make sure to savour every minute of it.

Why hidden roads feel better than famous ones

Because they don’t feel curated.

No crowds.

No pressure.

No forced energy.

Just road, views, and your own thoughts.

That’s the difference.

You don’t need Scotland, a full tank and a hotel booking.

You need:

• A clear evening

• A good playlist

• A road with character

And suddenly, driving feels like freedom again.
